Liverpool will have to go head-to-head with Italian giants AC Milan for the signing of Swiss international Granit Xhaka, reports talkSPORT

The Reds had targeted the 21-year-old midfielder as a potential long term replacement for club captain Steven Gerrard, however Brendan Rodgers will now have to battle Milan for the player's signature.

Xhaka has been in fine form for Borussia Monchengladbach this season and is now recognised as one of the finest young talents in Europe.

With Liverpool ready to swoop for the star, the German outfit will be reluctant to part with the Swiss ace as he only joined the club from Basel for £7 million last summer.

However, the Bundesliga club could be tempted to let Xhaka leave Germany if they are offered in excess of £15m.

It remains to be seen as to whether Liverpool will be willing to pay over that figure however, with AC Milan also snooping around, Rodgers may soon up his interest in the youngster.

Liverpool's immediate attention will be on their clash with West Ham United at Anfield tomorrow.
