Standard Liege's Jupiler League fixture against OH Leuven this weekend was marred by a shocking incident that saw Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez given his marching orders after he was seen to punch an opponent who had sent him sprawling to the turf just moments before.
Moroccan international Carcela-Gonzalez, who re-joined Liege from troubled Russian Premier League outfit Anzhi Makhachkala earlier this year following a two-year stint away from Stade Maurice Dufrasne, saw the red mist after becoming the victim of a quite shocking challenge from Bjorn Ruytinx.
After Belgian Ruytinx had administered a truly despicable lunge that meant Carcela-Gonzalez had to be later carried from the pitch with a presumably badly-damaged ankle, the 24-year-old lost the moral high-ground by awkwardly rising to his feet and issuing a shocking punch that sent Ruytinx to the floor.
Needless to say, Carcela-Gonzalez was red carded immediately. However, somehow, the referee only deemed the initial 'tackle' worthy of a caution.
