The Lotus team have put in a request for the opening pre-season test of 2014, due to take place at Spain’s Jerez circuit, to be delayed by a week.
According to Speed Week correspondent Matthias Brunner the Enstone based team is struggling to be ready in time for the opening test, which will see the new V6 units run officially for the first time, and put in the request at the meeting of the F1 Commission earlier this week.
The team has been one of several teams struggling financially to survive as the costs of development outweigh income and despite promises of investment from a group known as Quantum Racing, the team were forced to take Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado and his near €40m in sponsorship for 2014.
And despite the request, the chances of it being successful seem to be fairly low.
“Everyone knew the date for Jerez, and everyone made their plans accordingly,” an unnamed team boss told the German publication.
“If someone is not ready, that is not anyone else’s problem.”
Lotus will also not be participating in next week’s Pirelli tyre test in Bahrain though - despite six teams being reported as heading to the island state in fact only four teams will be participating, Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull and Toro Rosso.
Force India and McLaren were the two other teams mentioned, however according to Brunner a spokesman for McLaren confirmed they would not in fact be going, Force India would not confirm or deny the claim.
The test will be the final time the 2013 cars with V8 engines are run in anger as they collect data from the 2014 tyres, all teams are permitted to send observers and all data will be shared.
