The controversy in the AFL world regarding the Essendon drug scandal has re-surfaced after allegations that suspended Essendon coach James Hird is still be being paid were met with contrasting stories from the AFL and Essendon himself.
Revelations from over the past week have suggested that Hird is still being paid a salary equivalent to that of his contract.
Confusion has emerged after AFL president Andrew Demetriou has claimed that the AFL have paid no part of the alleged salary and were unknowing that such payment had continued into his suspension.
According to The Herald Sun however, the claims of Demetriou have contrasted with that of Hird's wife, Tania, who claims that AFL hierarchy knew about the payments which were part of the 'deal' involving Hird's suspension. She claims Hird would have challenged the authorities in the supreme court if pay had not been included as part of the sanctions.
Hird was banned from coaching on August 27 for 12 months amidst the controversy over the club's use of banned substances in their supplements policy for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
The scandal rocked the AFL and led to serious sanctions being placed on the club. As well as the suspension of head coach Hird, Essendon were also fined $2million, banned from the 2013 finals series after finishing 7th on the ladder and were stripped of draft picks.
When asked to comment further on the revelation, the AFL declined whilst Essendon also declined to speculate on what they described as confidential agreements.
