Chelsea have offered Serie A giants AS Roma the chance to sign Demba Ba for £12.6m, reports

The Senegalese striker only moved to Stamford Bridge from Newcastle in January but has struggled to convince Jose Mourinho that he has a long term future at the club.

Ba came close to leaving for Arsenal in the summer, but the move was called off by Mourinho following the Gunners' acquisition of Mesut Ozil, who instead sent Romelu Lukaku on loan to Everton.

Roma manager Rudi Garcia made an enquiry for Ba in the summer and, alongside Arsene Wenger, maintains an interest.

But in a bid to keep the 28-year-old away from Arsenal's clutches, Chelsea have directly contacted AS Roma about a potential transfer deal.

The Blues have set their asking price at £12.6m for Ba, which is almost double what they paid for him in January and would prefer to see him move abroad rather than join a domestic rival like Arsenal.

The news will be a blow to Wenger, who is still keen to reinforce his forward line when the transfer window reopens in January.

Ba has so far scored three times for Chelsea in 12 appearances this season, most notably scoring the winner against Steaua Bucharest on Wednesday.

He continues to be used sparingly in the Premier League, however, starting just twice thus far.
