Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is reportedly 'extremely angry' after being benched by coach Mike Shanahan.

The claim was made by NFL Network's Mike Silver, who is led to believe that RG3 has been benched for performance issues rather than health reasons.

Shanahan stated that he left the 23-year-old on the bench in favour of Kirk Cousins because he was concerned that RG3 might suffer an injury.

However, this appeared a somewhat flimsy excuse, with the player himself adamant that he is currently fit to play.

There has been a significant backlash Shanahan in recent days. NFL Hall of Famer John Madden described the coach's decision to drop RG3 as "baloney", adding that it has hurt the integrity of the game.

Madden went on to describe the Redskins, who take on Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, as a "dysfunctional group".

Shanahan's team have lost their last five matches, but it is currently unclear whether RG3 will start this weekend.
