Thirty year old West Indian off spinner Shane Shillingford has been suspended from bowling by the International Cricket Council after his bowling action was deemed illegal.
Both he and Marlon Samuels were reported to the ICC for suspicious bowling actions in the recent West Indies test series against India, and further investigation showed that Shillingford's arm extends beyond the maximum 15 degrees.
The tests also showed that Marlon Samuels only exceeds the limit when bowling his quicker ball and consequently he was banned from bowling it.
Samuels is less affected by his ban as not only can he continue bowling normal off breaks but he is very much an all rounder who has established himself as a good enough batsman for the West Indies side and will therefore continue to play for the West Indies.
Shillingford on the other hand is a specialist bowler and will withdraw from international cricket until he remodels his action.
West Indies coach Ottis Gibson said: "Though I felt confident about the way the two players performed at the testing, the report did not come back in our favour. Shane is obviously gutted, but Marlon's role in the team, as I have said previously, is primarily as a batsman, so the impact on him is a little bit less."
"We will formulate a suitable plan of action and work to rehabilitate their bowling actions in the New Year, so Shane can continue his international career in the shortest possible time and Marlon can continue to contribute with the ball when he's required.
"They are both tough characters and have had their share of ups and downs in the game over the years. We have no doubt that they will emerge from this latest setback with the utmost confidence."
Both have two weeks to launch an appeal but with the West Indies being in the middle of a test series and both having been banned from bowling previously it is unlikely that the decision will be overturned.
