Napoli forward Gonzalo Higuain has emerged as a potential transfer target for Chelsea heading into the January window, according to reports in Portugal.

Portuguese newspaper A Bola claims Jose Mourinho has added a new name to his shortlist after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Sunderland in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.

The Chelsea boss was reportedly furious with his strikers after another toothless performance.

Neither Samuel Eto'o or Demba Ba could find the net against the Black Cats with Fernando Torres on the bench.

The trio have struggled to find the net for Chelsea this term, with speculation mounting Mourinho could lodge a big-money bid for a new striker in the January window.

Edinson Cavani and Radamel Falcao have been linked but the latest report claims Napoli's Higuain is also under consideration.

A number of stumbling blocks could hurt Chelsea's chances of landing the Argentina international though.

Firstly, the former-Real Madrid star is happy in Italy having moved in the summer from Real Madrid for £32m.

The 26-year-old has eight goals in his first 15 league appearances for the Serie A side, and he's settled in nicely under Rafa Benitez at the Stadio San Paolo.

And secondly, Higuain felt undervalued by Mourinho when he played under the Portuguese boss at the Bernabeu.
