Notre Dame will not enrol basketball star Jerian Grant for the rest of the season due to problems with his academic performance, the player has confirmed.

However, he is confident of returning for the Spring semester before playing his final season of college basketball in South Bend.

“I am no longer part of the basketball program and will not be on the court competing with my teammates for the remainder of the 2013-14 season,” Grant said in a statement.

“I take full responsibility for my lack of good judgment and the poor decision that I made.

"I have no one to blame but myself for the situation. I know and understand the expectations that go with being a student at Notre Dame and I did not live up to those standards.

"I understand that there is a process that I must go through in order to come back to school and I will be patient with that process."

At 6-foot-5, Grant has averaged 19 points and 6.2 assists. On Saturday, in what turned out to be his last game of the season, he went for 18 points and four assists but saw Fightin Irish go down 61-64 to Ohio State.

Mike Brey will now look towards freshman Demetrius Jackson to take a more scoring role in place of guard Grant.

The Fighting Irish are currently 8-4 this season and face Canisius in their next game on December 29th.

Grant is rated as No.92 in the Top 100 prospects list.
