Arsenal boss reveals admiration for Chelsea star

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admitted last night that he would have no qualms about re-signing Ashley Cole if he needed to add a left-back to his squad.

Wenger's comments came after his side played out a goalless draw with London rivals Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.

Cole, who enjoyed an eight-year spell in Arsenal's first team before moving across London, has found games hard to come by under Jose Mourinho so far this season.

The 33-year-old was an unused substitute against Arsenal, which prompted a journalist into asking Wenger if he would be looking to re-sign Cole.

“Honestly, if I needed a left-back then yes," Wenger told West London Sport. "But I have left-backs and he [Cole] cannot play in another position.

“Despite everything, yes. What happened was a difference in negotiation. Apart from that, I don’t wonder whether I would sign him or not, because I have a left-back.”

Cole is out of contract at the end of the season and it appears unlikely the veteran defender will get a new deal if he cannot force his way back into Mourinho's starting line-up.

Several sides across Europe will be keeping an eye on the Chelsea star's situation, however it seems Wenger will have to sell either Kieran Gibbs or Nacho Monreal if Arsenal are to land the England international.
