Manchester United will have to smash their own transfer record in order to sign Marco Reus in January.
According to the Daily Mail, Reus' current employers - Borussia Dortmund - have slapped a mammoth price tag on the versatile attacker and the Red Devils will have to pay £40 million if they wish to land a player believed to be one of the club's main targets.
24-year-old Reus, who joined Bundesliga title hopefuls Dortmund from Borussia Mönchengladbach in January 2012, is a key figure for Jurgen Klopp's side and it is not too difficult to see why they appear to have attached such a seemingly large fee to a player who has already netted eight goals so far this season.
Manchester United, who currently sit eighth in the Premier League table after enduring an unsteady start to life under the tutelage of former Everton favourite David Moyes, have been linked with Reus for several weeks now.
The Germany star, whose technique and sheer versatility would make him an incredibly useful addition to the ranks at Old Trafford, reportedly did have a release clause of £29.4 million in his contract at Signal Iduna Park, but that appears to have altered somewhat in light of the move that saw Mario Gotze enticed to domestic rivals Bayern Munich during a hectic summer.
After losing arguably their most valuable asset to such a fierce rival in truly gut-wrenching circumstances. it would not be a shock to see Dortmund take somewhat of a harsher and more resolute stance to interest in their better players in future.
Whether Manchester United will indeed be willing to pay such an exorbitant fee to land Reus, though, remains to be seen.
Given Moyes' dramatic failings in the summer market and the club's underwhelming season so far, fans will surely be desperate to see the club invest considerable sums on the kind of world-class talent that is crucial to ensure that they are not let cut adrift of the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal in the years to come.
