As if the debate over whether Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi deserve to be called the world's best player needed any further weight, it's time for the much-debated yearly top 100 footballers poll conducted by The Guardian.

Just about every football fan on the planet has an opinion over which one of La Liga's leading lights deserve stand-alone star status, preferring either the supreme physical specimen that is Ronaldo or the skill and indomitable spirit of Messi.

The regular rivals have competition this season though from a whole host of stars on the continent, most notably treble-winning Franck Ribery and Mr.Consistency Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

This year The Guardian's poll asked 15 stellar judges to compile their top 100 including former Italy defender Alessandro Nesta, with some interesting results and equally surprising omissions.

Let's take a look at the 10 players selected as world football's elite performers over the last 12 months.

Paris Saint-Germain
Gareth Bale
Bayern Munich
Real Madrid
Cristiano Ronaldo
Franck Ribery
