LeBron James yesterday added the Associated Press' 2013 Male Athlete of the Year award to his ever-growing list of triumphs.

The Miami Heat star capped off what has been a truly magnificent year in scintillating fashion, becoming only the 3rd NBA player to have ever won the award.

James received 31 of 96 votes cast in the poll, beating Peyton Manning (20) and Jimmie Johnson (7) to the accolade which has been run annually since 1931.

The reigning MVP joins the likes of Muhammed Ali, Michael Phelps and Tiger Woods whilst being behind only Michael Jordan and Larry Bird in terms of NBA stars to have taken home the award.

Humble as ever, King James refused to dwell too much on his on-court accomplishments when asked by the Associated Press, stating that his involvement in basketball has roots that go deeper than simply the entertainment factor he brings.

"I'm chasing something and it's bigger than me as a basketball player," James said.

"I believe my calling is much higher than being a basketball player. I can inspire people. Youth is huge to me. If I can get kids to look at me as a role model, as a leader, a superhero ... those things mean so much, and that's what I think I was built for. I was put here for this lovely game of basketball, but I don't think this is the biggest role that I'm going to have."

James and the Heat travel to Sacramento tonight in search of a seven straight win.
