Arsenal and Chelsea have a new rival for the signature of Europe's newest potent predator in Diego Costa, with Borussia Dortmund reportedly identifying the Atletico Madrid hitman as the perfect replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

The Polish striker is due to announce his much-vaunted move to Bayern Munich within the next few days, which means it's time for the German giants to once again prepare for a star player to join their fiercest Bundesliga rivals.

Costa's quite magnificent haul of 19 goals in 17 La Liga games this season has attracted the interest of Europe's top clubs, with Premier League duo Arsenal and Chelsea thought to be the most likely suitors.

Both title contenders are actively seeking to improve their options in attack, at least on a long-term basis if they cannot secure a top target in January.

The Gunners in particular would like to give Olivier Giroud quality competition for a starting spot but now have Dortmund in the chase for player thought to have a release clause of £34m in his current contract, according to The Express.

Atletico chiefs have so far insisted that they would rebuff any approach for their star man when the transfer window reopens this week, but could be forced into a summer exit similar to the move which took Radamel Falcao to Monaco if the price is right.
