Chelsea’s New Year got off to a less than rosy start after it was revealed that both Frank Lampard and Branislav Ivanovic are facing up to a month out with injury.
The Blues were both forced off with knocks during the victory over Liverpool last weekend, and were missing from the side that bowled over Southampton 3-0 yesterday.
Following the win over the Saints Jose Mourinho confirmed fears that the first-team duo were facing a spell on the sidelines, stating that they wouldn’t be returning to action until at least the end of the January.
Lampard is believed to be suffering from a muscle injury, while his Serbian team-mate is having problems with his knee.
Chelsea remain in 3rd place in the Premier League table following a relatively indifferent start to the season, but Mourinho is expected to bring in a number of fresh faces in order to improve his squad’s fortunes in the second half of the campaign.
The west London outfit play Derby in the third round of the F.A Cup on Sunday.
