Manchester United wanted to sign De Rossi

Manchester United manager David Moyes has revealed the Premier League champions were interested in the acquisition of Roma midfielder Daniele de Rossi during the summer transfer window.

The club strived desperately to recruit a player of some repute to bolster their midfield options before the deadline at the beginning of September but were only able to bring Marouane Fellaini to Old Trafford.

De Rossi was linked with a £20 million move to Manchester United and Moyes has admitted the Italian was among the options the club considered during their summer of transfer frustration.

"We certainly did think in the summer about bringing him here," Moyes told reporters.

"I don’t think it went as far as a bid, because I think there was something to do with a deadline on his contract.

"But yes, he was a player we thought was a good player."

Manchester United are expected to conduct some business of note given their failings during Moyes' first window at the helm, and the signing of a midfielder would appear to remain a priority for the club.

Koke of Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus have been mentioned as targets for Manchester United, although a renewed approach for former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas would appear to be unlikely.
