Arsenal favourites to land Diego Costa

Manchester United are reported to have entered into the race to sign Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa before the transfer deadline, but Arsenal remain the favourites to clinch a deal for La Liga's top goalscorer.

Costa has been in irresistible form so far this season and has found the net 19 times in 18 appearances to propel Atleti to joint top of the Primera Division, behind Barcelona on only goal difference.

The 25-year-old's goalscoring exploits have led to frequent suggestions of a winter departure and, according to SkyBet, Arsenal is the most likely destination for Costa come February 1.

Arsenal are listed as the clear favourites to land the player at a price of 11/4 while Chelsea and Manchester United are significantly further back on 16/1 and 20/1 respectively.

The Gunners would appear to be in need of reinforcements up front given their failure to land a proven striker during the summer, although Olivier Giroud has been able to flourish as Arsene Wenger's undoubted first-choice.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are being credited with interest in Costa, rated at £32 million, following their shambolic departure from the FA Cup on Sunday.

David Moyes saw his side lose 2-1 to Swansea City, their second consecutive defeat at Old Trafford, and is ready to spend big to bolster before the window closes.
