Real Madrid are interested in the idea of replacing Angel di Maria with out of favour Chelsea star Juan Mata, according to French newspaper Le 10 Sport.

The source, citing Sport publication in Spain, suggests that Di Maria, who is currently shrouded in controversy in Madrid following a gesture made to home fans, could be on his way out and that Mata is the man Los Blancos want to replace him.

From the outside looking in the transfer would make sense for all parties, with Di Maria thought to have tiptoed around the Madrid exit door since the summer arrival of Gareth Bale and Mata seemingly destined to depart Stamford Bridge this month.

The latter of those two is likely to be the more open to a move, having seen his game-time significantly reduced at a time when the World Cup would suggest that it needs to be at an all time high.

However the move many centre around Carlo Ancelotti’s stance concerning the future of his Argentinian winger.

The Madrid boss has insisted that no deals, either in or out of the club, will be taking place this January, and it’s unlikely Mata, valued at around £30million, will be bought in if Di Maria remains on the books.

The former Benfica man has been targeted by the likes of Arsenal and Juventus, but he may well stay until the summer.
