Liverpool are weighing up a move for highly-rated Palermo striker Abel Hernandez, reports the Daily Mirror.

According to Italian publication Tutto Mercato, the 23-year-old is on the Merseyside club's radar, and could be on his way to the Premier League this January.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is looking to strengthen his attacking ranks during the mid-season window, and has identified the Uruguay international as a viable acquisition.

The fine form of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge at Anfield this season has kept Liverpool in Premier League title contention, and the addition of Hernandez could help fire them to the domestic crown.

Hernandez has been in prolific form for Palermo this season, scoring 11 goals in 17 appearances in Serie 'B'.

However, Liverpool face rival competition for the South American striker's signature, with Italian giants Fiorentina also monitoring the player's situation at Stadio Renzo Barbera.

Gennaro Gattuso would prefer to keep Hernandez in Sicily until the end of the current campaign at least, but knows that prolific marksman might become unsettled in light of reported interest from bigger clubs.
