Manchester United, Chelsea and other Premier League suitors for Benfica star Nemanja Matic now face fresh competition to sign the Serbian hardman, with Bayern Munich contacting the Portuguese side to register a formal enquiry last night, according to the Lisbon edition of O Jogo.

Matic has been consistently linked with a whole host of top sides across Europe over the last 12 months as he continues to impress for Benfica, providing an assured presence in central midfield that is also thought to have Arsenal, Liverpool and former club Chelsea mulling over summer bids.

The 25-year-old could snub a Premier League return though in favour of interest from Bayern though, with Pep Guardiola thought to have identified the anchor as a potential addition despite their star-studded options in midfield, which include Bastian Schweinsteiger, Javi Martinez and Toni Kroos.

Benfica are believed to have received a tentative declaration of interest from the German giants, but the Portuguese giants have given no indication that they are prepared to budge on Matic's £38m release clause at this stage.

United and the Blues may be perennially mentioned in connection with a bid for the Serbian international but have not made that reported interest concrete, with Benfica likely to hold out until at least this summer before parting with their prized asset.
