Arsenal have made contact with the agent of Mattia Destro to ask about the prospect of a January transfer, according to Italian source Rai TV.

Destro has struggled to get games at AS Roma side this season, with Rudi Garcia preferring to use Francesco Totti and former-Gunners ace Gervinho instead.

But in four games, the 22-year-old has netted three goals, inspiring interest from Arsene Wenger.

The Arsenal boss is hunting for reinforcements up front with Theo Walcott sidelined for the rest of the season and Nicklas Bendtner three weeks away from a return to action.

Recent reports have linked the Frenchman with a move for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata but time and again Carlo Ancelotti has reiterated his desire to keep the young Spaniard at the Bernabeu.

Now the Italian media have linked Wenger with strong interest in Destro with Rai TV even claiming that Gunners representatives have contacted the player's agent Claudio Vigorelli to discuss his availability.

But it seems Wenger is approaching yet another impasse with regards to signing a striker as Roma have so far refused to entertain the idea of selling Destro and have so far rejected Arsenal's attempts to open up official negotiations.

Roma are currently trying to chase down Serie A leaders Juventus in a bid to claim their first Italian league title since 2001.

Arsenal, however, are also chasing down their first Premier League title since 2004 and Wenger seems determined not to let that challenge fall by the wayside in the second half of the season.
