Chelsea legend targeted by Serie A giants

Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has been targeted by AC Milan for a surprise January loan swoop as they look for experienced options to reverse their shocking start to the season, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Essien has been restricted to just four appearances in the Premier League so far this season, despite being reunited with Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge following a loan spell with the Special One at Real Madrid last year.

Milan are hoping that the Ghana international has become frustrated with a lack of consistent first-team opportunities, with the offer of a loan switch for the remainder of the season thought to be imminent.

The Rossoneri are currently languishing in the bottom half of Serie A following a wretched first half of the campaign, a whopping 17 points off Champions League qualification despite adding Kaka to a forward line which already includes Mario Balotelli and Stephan El Shaarawy last summer.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho is wary that Essien could be desperate for regular game time at the age of 31, which has prompted Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani to ponder a January loan offer that has yet to be formalised.
