Football News

The FIFA Ballon d'Or award is annual prize awarded to the best footballer over the previous year. Since the award as it is now began running in 2010, Lionel Messi has dominated the competition with three straight wins until 2012.

The Barcelona superstar's reign of terror came to an end last night, however, as arch-nemesis Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the 2013 edition during a typically lavish ceremony in Zurich.

As with all of football's major debates, opinions have been split on just who of Messi, Ronaldo or Bayern Munich wideman Franck Ribery deserved to win last night's award.

With the argument continuing to rage, GMS decided it was time for us to weigh in with a classic dose of statistical analysis.

Using the following graphic* provided by the fine folks over at 101 Great Goals, we will determine once and for all who deserved to win last night's award.

Click on to find out who we've chosen and don't forget to leave your thoughts below. What do you make of the stats?

Who do you think deserved to win the Balon d'Or this year? Was Ronaldo's triumph justified or did Messi or Ribery merit it more?

*Please note, due to the enormous number of stats featured on that aforementioned graphic, we have been rather selective with regards to which ones we have chosen to look into.

We've also tried to select a range of stats from across the board, to give a clear indication of each player's all-round game.

At the end of each relevant stat, we will award one point to whoever comes out on top in that particular area.
