Stephen Maguire battled past Joe Perry 6-4 to book his place in the last eight of the Dafabet Masters.
Perry now shares the record of six consecutive appearances in an invitational event without a win with John Virgo.
The Gentleman did put up a fight, coming from 5-1 down to take the game to 5-4 but Maguire was too strong for him on the day and sealed the win, taking the final frame.
Glasgow's Maguire hit breaks of 112 and 80 to go in front before Perry tried to fight back with 78. But Maguire then took the next three legs with a 56 high-break before the Englishman managed to claw his way back with a high break of 106 to take the score to 5-4.
But it was the Glaswegian who held his nerve to take the final frame and set up a quarter-final match with either Neil Robertson or Mark Allen on Friday.
After the win, Maguire was quoted by WorldSnooker.com: "I had a couple of chances to finish the match off earlier, then Joe got the bit between his teeth and made it difficult for me.
"I have made a change to my technique and I felt good at the start of the match. It's a bit of a gamble to change things but I wasn't getting anywhere before.
"I love it at this venue and I wanted to win so I can come back to the arena. Mark or Neil in the next round will be very tough."
Maguire's last title came at last year's Welsh open so this would be a good way for the Scotsman to climb back up the rankings.
