Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is keen to wrap up a £35m deal for Schalke star Julian Draxler - and then turn him into the new Robin van Persie, according to the Mirror.

The 20-year-old is widely regarded as one of the Bundesliga's most talented young attacking midfielders, but Wenger reportedly believes he can be moulded into the club's new centre-forward, similar to Van Persie, who left the Gunners after eight years to join Manchester United in 2012.

Although Draxler has a £35m release clause in his contract, Schalke and the player himself would still need to give the green light in order for the transfer to go through.

Wenger accepts that he may need to wait until the summer before signing the Germany international, who already has 10 caps to his name, but the Mirror report that enquiries have bring made to bring his primary transfer target to the Emirates Stadium this month.

The Gunners previously attempted to bring Draxler to north London last summer but, instead, they managed to strike a £42m deal to sign fellow German playmaker Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid.
