Barcelona starlet Sergi Roberto insists that he never considered leaving the Camp Nou.

The 21-year-old had been linked with a switch to the Premier League earlier this season, with Manchester United and Tottenham at the front of the queue to sign the highly-rated midfielder.

However, Roberto has featured regularly under Barcelona coach Tata Martino this season, and the player insists that he never considered leaving the Catalan giants.

"It was hard to get into the rotations to begin with, but now I'm very happy," Roberto was quoted as saying by MARCA. "I need to keep working hard and make the most of it."

"At no time did I ever consider leaving Barcelona. That was the right decision."

Roberto has made 10 La Liga appearances for Barcelona this season and is now being tipped as a potential replacement for club legend Xavi, who turns 34 later this month.

However, Roberto has responded to the Xavi comparisons with modesty, insisting that he has a long way to go before he reaches the standards of the Spanish World Cup winner.

"He is one of the best in the world," he continued. "I'm just getting started. I'd be happy to be a small part of what Xavi is."

Roberto also reserved special praise for Martino, who has come in for criticism from sections of the club's supporters and Spanish media this season for his tactical philosophy.

"Tata has been very important for me," the youngster continued. "He has put a lot of trust in me. I've been playing for 12 games and I hope to repay that trust."
