Premier League giants have now had more than two weeks to chase transfer targets in the first instalment of 2014's spending spree across the continent, although the first fortnight of the January window has largely passed without major incident among Europe's leading lights.

The likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool have been persistently linked with a whole host of exciting additions, but failed to turn speculation into concrete offers at a notoriously difficult time of year to sign fresh talent at a fair price.

Waiting nervously to see if their clubs do business are a clutch of quality Premier League players currently experiencing a frustrating campaign, either through a lack of first-team opportunities or a failure to meet their own high standards on the pitch.
