Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Napoli striker Goran Pandev in the January transfer window, according to the Metro.

The 30-year-old striker has been linked with moves to the Premier League in the past which have failed to materialize but that could now change in the face of Spurs' interest.

With Jermain Defoe leaving White Hart Lane in favour of a move for Toronto, manager Tim Sherwood is keen to sign a replacement.

Previous manager Andre Villas-Boas usually only played with one striker during his tenure therefore Roberto Soldado and Defoe were used in rotation. However, since the Portuguese's sacking Sherwood has played an extra striker and recalled Emmanuel Adebayor who had previously been frozen out.

Pandev could be the man to replace Defoe as he is surplus to Rafael Benitez's requirements in Italy with the attacking positions dominated by big money signings Gonzalo Higuain, Dries Mertens and Jose Callejon.

However, any deal could be dependent on the Serie A club signing Michel Bastos and Jorginho from Al Ain and Hallas Verona respectively.

Pandev has a good reputation in Italian football after other spells with Lazio and Inter Milan before joining Napoli in 2011 on loan initially and 2012 permanently.

He has 18 goals from 78 League appearances for Napoli and, as captain, with Macedonia he is their all-time record goalscorer with 26.

Napoli are currently third in Serie A whilst Spurs are sixth in the Premier League.
