Manchester United are preparing an audacious bid for Chelsea’s unsettled attacking midfielder Juan Mata, according to the Daily Mail.

Red Devils boss David Moyes is keen on improving his midfield options before the end of January and has identified Mata as the man to add some creativity to his side.

Manchester United’s chances of signing the Spanish international have been boosted due to the Premier League champions’ poor form so far this season.

Moyes’ opposite number Jose Mourinho believes Manchester United are too far behind to seriously challenge Chelsea for this season's Premier League title - so could be prepared to let Mata move to Old Trafford within the next fortnight.

Reports claim Mata, who has failed to hold down a regular place in Chelsea’s starting line-up this season, could move to Manchester United for a fee believed to be in the region of £20million before the transfer window slams shut on January 31.
