Former basketball star Dennis Rodman has checked into rehabilitation following his trip to North Korea.

The 52-year-old appeared to be drunk during his spell in North Korea to celebrate Kim Jong-un's birthday.

Rodman has blamed his appearance on CNN - when he swore on live television after being criticised with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un - on his drinking habits.

The former NBA star has since apologised for his antics and blamed his public outburst on alcohol.

Rodman's agent Daniel Prince believes his client was affected by his trip to North Korea and the criticism he has received from the media.

Prince said on Rodman's alcohol problems: "What was potentially a historic and monumental event turned into a nightmare for everyone concerned.

"Dennis Rodman came back from North Korea in pretty rough shape emotionally.

"He is embarrassed, saddened and remorseful for the anger and hurt his words have caused."

Rodman was also criticised for singing Happy Birthday to Mr Kim before an NBA side, made up of former players, took on a North Korean basketball team in a charity match.

Mr Kim has been in the spotlight for the role he played in the imprisonment of US citizen Kenneth Bae, who has been ordered to serve 15 years' hard labour for allegedly planning to overthrow the North Korean government.
