Luis Suarez had been doing an admirable job indeed of staying away from controversy this season, but the Liverpool striker saw himself in the spotlight for the wrong reasons on Saturday evening.
The Uruguay international has been in wonderful form so far this term - scoring 22 goals in 17 games - but it was back to the dark days at the weekend after he was accused of diving to win a penalty.
Liverpool had been trailing 2-1 when Suarez went down in the Aston Villa penalty area under pressure from Brad Guzan, and the referee chose to award the spot-kick.
It was one of those incidents that could have gone either way as Suarez anticipated the contact and chose to go to ground. The decision could easily have been a yellow card for simulation, but Suarez emerged victorious from the collision.
Suarez has certainly cleaned up his act this season and, although this example was among his most contentious, he seems to draw fouls more genuinely than not at present.
The referees would appear to agree with the 26-year-old among the top 10 free-kick winners in the division in 2013-14...
