Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is set for a return to action in Wednesday's Capital One Cup semi-final clash against Sunderland, reports

The England international has been out of action since New Year's Day and is now expected to act as a major boost to David Moyes' side.

The Red Devils have been in terrible form of late, having lost four of their last five matches in all competitions.

And, ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford, United will be looking to overturn their 2-1 deficit against the Black Cats.

Manchester United's latest setback came at the hands of Chelsea as Moyes' side were comfortably beaten 3-1 at Stamford Bridge. The United boss will now be desperate to get his side into the Capital One Cup final and the return of Rooney will only increase his team's chances.

Despite United's troubles this season, Rooney has been in fine form for the club and now Manchester United fans will be hoping the forward can help take them into the final.
