Manchester United have not made an official bid for Bayern Munich star Dante despite reports suggesting they were close to agreeing a deal, according to ESPN.

Dante lit a transfer fuse earlier today by suggesting that Manchester United were interested in signing him from the Bavarian club and that a deal could happen this month.

Speaking to Fox Sports Brasil, the defender said: "I'm thankful for the Manchester United interest, it will all be sorted out by the end of the month. We have to wait until January 31 because there is a lot going on."

The same source then announced via Twitter that Dante was close to agreeing a switch to Old Trafford in what would represent an encouraging move from David Moyes.

Manchester United are in need of defensive reinforcements with Nemanja Vidic suspended for the next three games following his red card against Chelsea while concerns remain over the form and fitness of several other stars.

Although ESPN claim that sources at Manchester United did not rule out a move for Dante in the future, they confirmed that they have yet to make any formal approach for the player and insist that their current interest has been exaggerated.

Manchester United a rumoured to have watched over 40 senior players over the course of the last few months. United have a free schedule thanks to their elimination from the FA Cup in the third round and Moyes will travel to central Europe to evaluate more targets.
