NFL legend Jerry Rice raised a few eyebrows when he picked New Orelans Saints quarterback and defensive end Robert Quin as the two captains for his ProBowl team - and says he is excited for the game in Hawaii this weekend.

The new Pro Bowl format sees Rice and fellow legend Delon Sanders selecting players in a schoolyard-style draft.

Brees and Quin were named as one captaincy duo, along with Kansas City running back Jamaal Charlesand Houston defensive end J.J. Watt for Sunday's game.

Rice won the right to pick which duo he wanted for his team first after wining a coin toss, and opted for a passer over a receiver in Brees.

"I'm so pumped -- I'm ready to run some routes," Rice said at a news conference. Sanders added: "That's exactly how I thought it was going to go."

When asked if the new format was going to leave some big-name players with bruised egos, Watt joked: "Don't think we forget Jerry picked them first".

The selection process has already begun ahead of Sunday's game, with the two head coaches splitting up the interior lineman, punters and fullbacks - with both squads set to be completed today.

Despite a low level of interest in the Pro Bowl in recent years, Brees says the game is still important for the players.

The Saints man insisted: "What it comes down to is just pride -- pride in your effort and your performance."

The Pro Bowl takes place on January 26 at the Aloha Stadium in Hawaii.
