Manchester United boss rules out move for £20m Real Madrid star

Manchester United will not be signing Real Madrid and Portugal defender Fabio Coentrao, reports suggest.

According to the Daily Telegraph, David Moyes has ruled out a move for the versatile star, with the Scot apparently determined to add a world-class left-back to his squad during the January transfer window.

The current incumbent of the number three shirt at Old Trafford is Patrice Evra. And while the French international has given years of great service to Manchester United, his contract is set to expire at the end of the 2013/14 campaign and it looks unlikely that an extension is forthcoming.

Coentrao, the 25-year-old who joined Real Madrid from Benfica back in 2011, was first linked with a potential move to Manchester United during the summer, but a late loan bid ultimately proved unsuccessful.

Such speculation has intensified once again with the January transfer window open for business, with reports earlier this month suggesting that the Red Devils were keen to take Coentrao on loan for the rest of the season and pay £14 million to make such a transfer permanent in the summer, with Real bosses apparently holding out for a fee of £20 million.

However, it now looks as if Moyes and Manchester United are prepared to move on to other targets as they look to sufficiently reinforce their backline after a worryingly inconsistent opening half of their first campaign withouth Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm.

Just who that left-back will, be, though, remains unclear with reports also suggesting that the club have abandoned a long-term pursuit of Everton's Leighton Baines and are thought to view Southampton starlet Luke Shaw's whopping £30 million price tag as too expensive.
