The Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings will meet tonight for the first time as inter-conference rivals.

The two teams were part of the original six teams of the NHL but until this year have always played together in the Eastern Conference.

Last year the two teams met in the Eastern Conference semi finals with the Blackhawks winning the series 4-3 including an overtime goal in game seven.

The Blackhawks now play in the Western Conference, and are doing well in second place just behind the Anaheim Ducks. The Red Wings meanwhile are in 11th place in the East and could do with a run of results to change things around.

Chicago have won their last two games including a high profile meeting with the Ducks, where they won 4-2.

The Red Wings however, have lost five of their last eight and would love nothing else but to beat Chicago to spark a run before the Olympic break.

Chicago is fully healthy outside of goalie Nikolai Khabibulin (long-term injured-reserve, rotator cuff surgery). Detroit  center Pavel Datsyuk (lower body), forward Johan Franzen (upper body), forward Stephen Weiss (sports hernia surgery) and forward Daniel Alfredsson (back) are all out.
