Referees are put on the pitch to maintain order and protect the players but it seems Lee Mason needs a reminder.

The Premier League official took charge of the heated Capital One Cup semi-final second leg between Manchester United and Sunderland, managing to keep order in the high stakes match.

As it's Mason's job is to dish out yellow and red cards for illegal tackles, he should have given one to himself after taking out two players in one hilarious swoop.

With Manchester United breaking towards the Sunderland goal, Craig Gardner struggled to keep up with his counterpart Danny Welbeck.

Without looking, Gardner crashed in to Mason, who tripped up Welbeck and ended up with the two players on the deck and Mason emerging unscathed.

One eagar Vine user caught the whole thing on video, allowing us to enjoy this hilarious collision.
