Chelsea are set to win the race for £16m-rated Mohamed Salah, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Egyptian international has been heavily linked with Liverpool, but the report claims Chelsea have pipped the Anfield club to a deal as Juan Mata nears his move to Manchester United.

In a turn of events that closely resembles Liverpool's pursuits of Willian and Henrikh Mkhitaryan last summer, Brendan Rodgers seems to have been pipped to the post for another attacking target.

The 21-year-old winger impressed against Chelsea in the Champions League this year, and the report claims Jose Mourinho has moved extremely quickly to tie up a deal.

Rodgers had hoped to make Salah his first signing of the January transfer window.

Liverpool are expected to have the funds available to make additions this month, but Rodgers felt Salah did not warrant a £16m outlay.

The Liverpool boss reportedly valued the player at closer to £8m.

But Chelsea have no problem matching Basel's valuation especially as they look set to receive a £37m windfall from the sale of Juan Mata to United.
