The San Francisco 49ers had reportedly lined up Eric Mangini to become their new quarterbacks coach, if their current offensive coordinator Greg Roman departed Candlestick Park, according to

The former head coach of the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets had been serving as a senior offensive consultant on Jim Harbaugh's coaching team this season, assisting current quarterbacks aid Geep Chryst.

It's believed the 43-year-old would have replaced Chryst as QC, with him shifting over to the OC slot, to fill the void left by Roman.

Mangini has been praised for his work with the 49ers these past seven months, particularly as he traditionally coached on the other side of the ball.

In fact, he actually worked for the California-based franchise as a defensive-minded assistant in 2005, before leaving for the head coach role with the Jets the following season.

There has also been suggestions that Mangini would like to earn himself another head coaching role, but having gained trust in San Francisco will more likely continue as part of Harbaugh's team of tutors.
