Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has identified Lewis Holtby as a surprise Jaunuary transfer target and wants to sign the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder in a £5m deal before the window shuts, according to the Daily Mail.

Holtby has found first-team opportunities difficult to come by since Tim Sherwood took charge of Spurs last month, failing to feature in any of their last four Premier League games.

The 23-year-old's peripheral role at White Hart Lane in recent weeks has alerted former club Schalke to the possibility of resigning the German international.

Klopp wants to usurp Schalke and sign Holtby this week though, with a growing injury list leading the Dortmund boss to ask transfer chiefs to make a deal happen before the January window shuts.

Dortmund lost Jakub Blaszczykowski for the rest of the campaign with a cruciate knee ligament injury last weekend, which has prompted Klopp's push to land Holtby in a cut-price deal.

Spurs want to keep Holtby and have so far refused interest from PSV Eindhoven and in particular Schalke, not wanting to pave the way for Julian Draxler to join fierce rivals Arsenal before the window shuts.
