"The Best Decision I Ever Made"

Indianapolis Colts tight end Coby Fleener has been reflecting on his choice of college today. In a blog post on, the ex-Cardinal wrote all about his decision process of ending up at Stanford.

The 25 year old revealed that he had already visited Nebraska and Arizona State and was seriously considering joining the Cornhuskers or Sun Devils.

The then high schooler did what any young person facing a big decision does, talk to their moms. And in her infinite wisdom, Mrs Fleener made the young athlete draw up and pros and cons list. The Seniors list looked something a little like this....

A world class education...amazing weather...possibility of a masters degree...great medical treatment.

Unknown, unproven coaches (Messrs Harbaugh, Shaw and Turley)...hard classes...far from fun...won't be extra popular...the jerseys aren't as outrageous as other schools."

Now to me and you - and with the benefit of hindsight - some of these reasons do seem incredibly petty, but they are the type of thing that go through a teenagers mind, especially one who's been told he could become an NFL player.

But luckily for all, Fleener did choose to become a Cardinal and didn't look back. He graduated with an undergraduate and masters degree from one of the world's best institutions and became one hell of a footballer along the way.

Reflecting back on his time, the 6"6 receiver tells his younger self how incredible the coaches are, the help he got as a student in classes, how everybody at college is far from home and that it's impossible not to make friends there.

Coby Fleener really did have his happily ever after but it would still be interesting to look into a crystal ball and see how Fleener the athlete and student would have turned out at Arizona or Nebraska.
