The Phoenix Coyotes will be gone, possibly never to be heard from again, once the current NHL season is over.

But don't worry fans, the team isn't going anywhere, but the name is changing.

As soon as the Stanley Cup is awarded and the season finishes, the Phoenix Coyotes will be known as the Arizona Coyotes.

"We are very excited to announce that our franchise name will change to Arizona Coyotes for the start of the 2014-15 NHL season," Anthony LeBlanc is quoted as saying on CBS Sports. "Becoming the Arizona Coyotes makes sense for us since we play our games in Glendale and the city is such a great partner of ours.

"We also want to be recognized as not just the hockey team for Glendale or Phoenix, but the team for the entire state of Arizona and the Southwest.

"We hope that the name 'Arizona' will encourage more fans from all over the state, not just the valley, to embrace and support our team."

The name change comes as no surprise after it was originally mentioned in the negotiations with the city of Glendale for a new lease agreement.

Glendale is now paying a good amount of money to support the franchise, understandably doesn't want the name of a nearby city attached to it.

Luckily for fans who own replica uniforms, the name change won't force any alterations to the team's current strip.

The word 'Phoenix' isn't printed anywhere on the current uniform, making the transition that much easier.
