Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs believes new signing Juan Mata can become one of the club’s all-time greats.

According to United’s official website, the Welsh winger praised Mata’s ability and tipped him to go on to great things at Old Trafford following last month’s £37.1million transfer from Premier League rivals Chelsea.

Whilst the Spaniard may have been deemed surplus to requirements under Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge he’s more than a welcoming boost for under fire United boss David Moyes, and Giggs can't see any reason why he can’t place himself alongside the likes of Bobby Charlton, George Best and Eric Cantona in the history books with the Red Devils.

When asked whether or not Mata had what it took to become a legend, his 40-year-old teammate said: "I think he could be. He's obviously got the talent.

"I don't want to put too much pressure on him but I don't see why not. I think that coming here will help him with regards to playing for Spain as well, if he is playing week in and week out [for us]. Spain have got a great side so if we have a regular Spanish player within Manchester United, it will be great because they are such a good team at the moment.

"The players are just like the fans. When they see a quality player come through the door, it gives them that excitement and you feel it around training. It gives everybody a lift.”

Despite Giggs’ optimism United currently sit 7th in the Premier League, having been beaten eight times already this season. Mata’s positive influence will need to be take effect soon or the current champions may well miss out on the chance to play any sort of European football next year.
