Chicago Blackhawks Patrick Kane is set to miss the team's clash with the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday night in order to attend his grandfathers funeral.

Kane will now return to his home town of Buffalo, N.Y ahead of the ceremony on Friday morning.

Astoundingly, Kane has played two games since first finding out about the loss of his relative, first competing against the Los Angeles Kings and even scoring twice and assisting another in a 5-3 win.

Kane also participated in last nights 2-0 victory over top ranked team in the NHL the Anaheim ducks.

Kane never told his team-mates about his loss prior to the Kings game but informed them of his grievances during the contest.

Following Monday's game against the Kings, Kane broke down in front of the media describing his closeness to his late grandfather.

He said: "He was a guy I kind of grew up with,

"He came to a lot of my hockey games, but I think more importantly for him he was more worried about grades and being a good kid. It's a tough day, for sure."

Kane is in the US mens hockey team for Sochi 2014 and is still scheduled to travel to Russia this weekend, despite missing the Blackhawks final game before the league mandated Olympic break.
