Real Madrid and Barcelona are on course to set up an El Clasico, Copa del Rey final after both were comfortable winners last night.
Madrid exacted revenge on neighbours Atletico as they thrashed their table-topping rivals 3-0.
There was no goal for world player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo to celebrate on his 29th birthday, but Angle Di Maria, Jese and an Emiliano Insua own goal gave Carlo Ancelotti’s side the win.
The game was marred, however, by alleged racial abuse towards Brazilian Marcelo during the warm-down after the match, according to Sky Sports.
Barcelona were equally comfortable as they strolled to a 2-0 victory against Real Sociedad in the other tie. Sergio Busquets opened the scoring before a comical own goal handed the Catalans the win.
The second-legs will take place next week, with it looking increasingly likely that we will have our first Clasico final since 2011.
Barca won the season’s previous contest, when they beat Los Blancos 2-1 at Camp Nou.
