With England’s best ever batsman under scrutiny for seemingly the thousandth time, there are many crying for answers to his exclusion from England’s future.
Kevin Pietersen has faced controversy throughout his career, from his early days at Natal in South Africa to ‘textgate’ in 2012 with Andrew Strauss, the ego-driven batsman is one of the most notoriously difficult to manage sportsmen in the world.
The cry for answers from the public and media alike is being met with a feeble and pathetic response of ‘no comment’ from many at the ECB, but the reality of finding the full details – like many are striving for – is a delusional dream.
Piers Morgan is leading the sickeningly idiotic calls for ‘justice’ in the case, but the release of any secret information on the fall out of Pietersen’s career would not be disclosed by any sports team in the world.
The damages that could be caused by letting all know the difficulties of a team who have faced an Ashes drubbing and the consistently troublesome KP would seriously affect the chance of the current England team to rebuild.
Several prominent media figures seem to be illustrating some form of conspiracy against Pietersen, which seems more bizarre when you analyse the character of the man. Renowned for being particularly full of himself and less than interested in making friends with the team, he is somewhat of a lone ranger, but never afraid to voice his opinion, how can this be constructive when rebuilding a side?
It isn’t. It won’t be and Pietersen is now 33, as he’s craving the money and fame of the IPL in a never ending power-struggle with KP and the ECB.
The question is now; How damaging can the remainder of this saga be to the redevelopment of English cricket?
From the simple cricketing perspective the search to replace Pietersen is not how it will be, but finding more of an orthodox alternative to fit in. We cannot expect another superstar match winner like KP, but perhaps someone who can benefit the team further as a whole, whilst growing a cricketer for all formats.
