Eoin Morgan has withdrawn his name from the Indian Premier League auction after the Middlesex batsman realised that he has an opportunity to cement his place in England’s test side following the ECB's decision to release Kevin Pietersen from his contract.
This also means that he would be available for Middlesex much earlier that he was expected to.
The Irish-born cricketer tweeted: “I would like to thank @IPL for accepting my request to withdraw from this year's auction. Good luck with the tournament.”
In my view, the left-hander has done the right thing to opt out of the IPL and leave its riches because Morgan as we all know is a terrific talent no matter what the format is.
After Pietersen’s sacking, England really need such a batsman who has experience as well as the ability to bat in a similar fashion to that of the South African, and Morgan fits the bill.
The ECB will now keep a close eye on what the 27-year-old does for Middlesex as he’ll be action for them in all the formats.
However, he’ll miss a little part of LV=County Championship because he will need some rest after England’s campaign Bangladesh ends, which means that he’ll play during the whole of April and part of May.
After that the selectors will sit down to select the team for the matches against Sri Lanka.
In short, Morgan will get only one and a half months to prove that he belongs in the test arena and get selected for England for the “Big English Summer”, which includes seven tests. Get ready Eoin....
