David Beckham has decided he’s had quite enough of not being involved in football.
Apparently, running underwear campaigns for H&M in your spare time isn’t as rewarding as it seems. Anyhow, the former England man has decided to exercise an option in his contract that allows him to pick up an MLS team for a song.
A $25 million song, but then again, he’s married to a Spice Girl who knows all about million dollar songs. No word yet on what the team will be called, or where it will play, or what its colours will be…or much of anything, come to think of it.
Beckham likely will take confidence in the fact that no matter what he comes up with, he can’t possibly be more of a laughingstock than the Miami Marlins.
Current projections have the team joining the league for the 2017 season, pending an actual place to play. Beckham wants the city of Miami to pony up a site, and they want him to front the cash for it.
Beckham has argued that the University of Miami Hurricanes football (the American kind) team could also use the stadium, since they’re having trouble selling out Sun Life Stadium.
In their defence, so are the Miami Dolphins. In fact, not even the champion Miami Heat are consistent sellouts - note the premature departure of many fans during Game 6 of the Finals last year.
So even after the stadium work outs, there still remains the question of success. This will be Miami’s second foray into the MLS, the first being the ill-fated Miami Fusion, which folded twelve years ago for lack of attendance. Florida also failed to keep the Tampa Bay Mutiny in business, which begs the question: What makes this time different?
For one, Beckham stated that he want to model his new team off of the success of the Miami Heat, by bringing in some of the best players in the world. Beckham’s connections to European football from his time there will surely be helpful in that endeavour, as will the recent trend of ageing pros from elite teams playing out the twilight of their careers in the US (i.e. Thierry Henry of Arsenal and the New York Red Bulls).
This plan to bring in European stars bodes well for the problem of attendance. Take, for example, the Seattle Sounders. Fronted by USA international and former Tottenham and Fulham man Clint Dempsey, the Sounders averaged an attendance last year of over 44,000 per game. This attendance was nearly on par with Chelsea FC in England, and would rank among the top of the premier league.
Unfortunately, no one can predict the future (else I’d have bet bigger on the Super Bowl), and so we football fans must wait and watch the success or failure of this new MLS team.
