New Orleans Saints have begun the process of trying to get back under their salary cap by jettisoning one of their big-money veteran players.

The Saints are said to be around $12 million over-budget, with a host of star players to tie down with new deals in the off-season.

One of those players is tight-end Jimmy Graham, who will command a huge salary thanks to his fine performances in the 2013 regular season.

Quarterback Drew Brees has offered to restructure his contract in order to help his team out but it looks like the Saints are going to go down a different route to get their house in order.

According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, veteran linebacker Will Smith will be released from his contract.

The 32-year-old has been part of the furniture at the Superdome for the last ten years - but the fact that he's on a $13.9 million-per-year deal means that he has to be jettisoned.

According to Rapoport, Smith could be the first of many out of the door, with wide receiver Lance Moore and safety Roman Harper both in danger of being cut.

Jabari Greer is another player with his head on the guillotine - although the fact that he would be eligible for $1.05 million in injury benefits if he were let go makes the situation complicated.
