As F1 fans around the world will be adjusting to the quieter tones of the new V6 era, those sat in the cockpits are also adjusting to a vastly different driving experience.
As the new V6 engine, allied to a new much more powerful ERS unit, generate roughly the same power output as the old V8′s the amount of torque is much higher.
“When I went out of the garage for the first time, I thought ‘Wow!’” Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton is quoted by Germany’s Sport Bild.
Sauber's Adrian Sutil was even more taken aback by the Ferrari's V6 oomph.
“When I accelerated out of the corner, I was surprised,” said the German, recalling his first moments with the Italian-mad V6.
“I changed from third to fourth gear, lost the rear and I spun.”
Mercedes’ second driver Nico Rosberg agrees: “The driveability with the turbo is a little bit of an adventure!”
While those with German power are enjoying the new thrust from the new engines, those with a French motor in the back are having slightly less fun.
After a terrible four days for Renault powered teams in Jerez, Lotus’ debut of the it’s new E22 seem to be a step forward as the Enstone team completed it’s permitted 100 km trouble free on Saturday.
However, as Toro Rosso completed it’s own ‘filming’ day at Italy’s Misano circuit it appears those hopes were soon dashed.
According to reports the STR9 completed only 70 km during the day and the Faenza team were often halted by batteries and software issues with it’s Renault V6 unit.
Certainly the mixed signals are a huge concern for their top supplier Red Bull who achieved the lowest amount of mileage in Jerez and as a result set the slowest best time of all 11 teams.
The news also comes days ahead of the second official test set to begin in Bahrain on the 17th February.
